ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This condition affects the person's behavior. The person tends to have difficulty in focusing, is fidgety, and often displays impulsive behavior.
The condition mostly becomes evident when there is change in the environment of the child (going to school for the first time). It is often diagnosed at an early age only that is under 12 years of age. With timely intervention and therapy the child can learn to live a normal and healthy life ahead.
ADHD affects an estimated 4% to 12% of school-aged children worldwide have ADHD.
Symptoms of ADHD in a toddler.
The symptoms of ADHD are often categorized under two types of behavioral issues:-
Attention deficit- inattentiveness and difficulty in concentrating
Hyperactivity or impulsive behavior- difficulty sitting in one place
It isn't mandatory that if a child presents with attention deficit, they will have hyperactivity too, or vice versa.
ADHD is more common in boys, and ADD (attention deficit disorder) is more common in girls, as the hyperactivity element isn't commonly observed in girls.
In the inattentive type, the child can present with these 6 major symptoms-
Ignores details and shows careless behavior.
Has difficulty staying focused.
It may seem like they aren't listening when spoken to.
Often avoids tasks that require constant mental concentration.
Doesn't complete the assigned task, like schoolwork or some puzzle they started.
Forgetfulness, often forgets objects of daily tasks, for instance, if they are going to school they'll forget some books
In the hyperactive/ impulsive type, the following symptoms can be observed:-
Fidgeting constantly, they aren't able to sit still.
Seems to have much more energy than other kids of similar age.
Cannot play quietly.
They cannot wait their turn while playing games
They blurt out answers before the question even finishes.
Due to impulsive behavior, they often end up taking other objects.
